Heat from the Forest -
Güssing
(Burgenland)
The project represents a model for the exploitation of alternative energy sources
and improves the quality of life in the region. The biomass heating
plant constructed in Güssing between 1995-1999, uses forest cuttings from
the
commercial
forests
of the Burgenland region. The plant operates with “fluidized bed
gasification” technology
to generate electricity and heat from biomass in which force-heat coupling is
implemented using gas motors.
Total project cost: 7,900,000 EUR
EU contribution: 1,300,000 EUR

Promoting
Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency - Vienna
In Vienna, the URBAN programme promotes highly skilled businesses in
renewable energy and improve public awareness about new energy technologies.
It created a business centre to specifically attract SMEs working in the
renewable energy sector. This centre, known as the Schmelz, provides these
companies with 5,500 m2 of new floor space in a recently refurbished building.

Development of a Bioenergy Network - Northern Central Finland
The project supports creation of a cooperation network within the bio-energy
sector, the coordination of the development projects, company-specific
guidance and the organisation of expert services. The Regional Council
of Central Finland, the municipalities of northern Central Finland and
the Jyväskylä Polytechnic’s Institute of Natural Resources has
gathered a group of companies for the regional energy network and recruited
a branch manager to coordinate the development activities. During the project
three heat cooperatives, one heat company and one briquette plant were
established. The increased utilization of domestic energy (wood chip, pellet,
peat and briquette) has replaced about 3,700,000 litres of oil saving over
EUR 1.4 Million annually.
Total
project cost: 259,000 EUR
Time period: 2000-2004
EU contribution: 85,000 EUR

Wood to Heat a School
With the expansion of a secondary school 1993-95, the Bavarian municipality
of Walsdorf near Bamberg equipped the building with a biomass heating system
fuelled by wood chips. First a
kindergarten, then some neighbouring houses and a residential home for
the elderly were connected to the school's heating system. Now a second
biomass heating plant is being built to supply an entire new building development
with heat from locally-produced agricultural products. For the new project
farmers, industries, and the municipality of Walsdorf have together set
up a heating company to operate the plant and supply the wood chips. A
total of 650 tons are required each year and 170 000 litres of fuel oil
are saved each year. Locally-grown small timber can be put to effective
use in place of fossil energy. Around 400 tons carbon dioxide reductions.
Emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides have been cut by approximately
750 kg. The ash is used as fertiliser.
In the Walsdorf secondary school, where the environmentally friendly
heating experiment was first unveiled, pupils can use simple, easy-to-read
meters to see how much energy their classrooms are consuming. And so, alongside
its many other benefits, the biomass heating plant also serves as a visual
teaching aid.
Total project cost: 2.2 Million DM (~ 1.1Million EUR)
EU contribution: 677,000 DM (~ 0.35 Million EUR)

Waste Not, Want Not (Biogas)
Each year, the Spanish province Asturias produces around 400,000 tonnes
of industrial waste, accounting for just over 2.5% of the national total.
Planning for this important aspect of environmental protection began in
1982 with the construction of a central waste depot at the initiative of
the principality and the 10 municipalities of the central Asturias region.
With co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund, this project
ran until 1993, when the industrial waste treatment plants were completed.
In addition to the controlled treatment of solid urban waste, which produces
over 32 Million kW/hour per year in electrical energy through biogas emissions,
about 40% of the recyclable waste (paper, cardboard, metals, glass and
plastics) has already found a secondary use.
Total project cost: 750,000 EUR
EU contribution: 325,000 EUR

Wood heat - Devon
Wood heat is an innovative alternative to burning fossil
fuels using modern wood fuelled boilers. The wood is from wood
residues left over from timber harvesting, or from short rotation coppice
on non-productive agricultural land. Farmers are the main suppliers and
are organised into cooperatives, which own the equipment.
Total project cost: £ 1,873,638.28 (~2.8 Million EUR)
